There’s something funny and lovable about Mexicans. Their cute smiles, gentlemanly manners, and great humor are just a bit of their adorable, outgoing personality. Before he’ll become your special someone or significant other, he’ll be your friend first. Even after the relationship is over, he will still remain a friend to you.

They say that the foreigners that Filipinos can relate the most are Mexicans. We share almost the same past, having had the same colonizer for almost equal amount of 300 years time. With being both former Spanish colonies, we share almost the same culture and traditions. Celebrating festivals in honor of our holy patron saints, honoring family values, being religious and dominantly Catholic are some of the ways that we can connect and relate to.

When it comes to cuisine, we also have an ample samples to name a few such as tamales, adobo, caldereta that have a striking similarity with theirs. Although they vary in terms of cooking method or the fillings used. We can’t also negate that there are thousands of Spanish words that Filipinos learn to integrate in Tagalog notwithstanding that the meanings might have altered over the years.

With all these similarities, what is there to learn from a Mexican boyfriend? Still a lot. Here are some:

1. Learn to speak Spanish

Even though your Mexican man knows English or other languages, he will still communicate with you in Spanish. Their language is the music of their soul. In order to understand him, you have to learn his native language.

It’s common courtesy that when you enter their country, Mexicans expect you to speak to them in Spanish. Otherwise, blunt stares is what you’ll get from the locals or if they won’t brush you off completely. It applies the same when you decide to enter in his heart, he presumes that you can speak to him in a language where he is most comfortable at.

Brush up your Spanish if you can converse it a bit, if not yet totally, better strike an effort to begin learning now. Worry not because I’m sure your Mexican guy will always be patient in teaching or correcting you if you miss some words.

He may not be a professional chef but he knows about food a lot. Good food that is. Even though he may had not done it at his Mexican home, observing how his mother cooks throughout the years somehow gives him an idea of how the best Mexican meal is being prepared.

There’s no shortcut to his procedure. There’s even no quick or instant ingredient to save him the cooking time. For him, what matters are the freshness of the ingredients. They don’t need magicsarap, ajinomoto, or other food seasoning mix to enhance the taste of the food. The secret to his tasty and flavorful dish are the fresh ingredients.

So, when I try to cook something for him, I make sure that it is made from raw and natural ingredients only and I never go wrong with that.

Believe me, he will take care of his chilis like how he would take care of you. He will store them in a nice container and before leaving them in the fridge for a while, he will seal it with a tender, short but sweet kiss.

He will always remember his preserved chili when he is about to eat. Thinking that he still has some chilies left will make him feel giddy and excited about it. If you don’t have chilies on your food, he ‘ll be concerned about it. Because for them food without chilies is like food without taste at all. So, he’ll start pouring in some chilies from the bottle to share them with you.

If you don’ t feel like eating with lots of chilis, just be polite and say no.

When you date a Mexican, you have to understand the fact that you’ll never be his top priority. You’ll always be second to his heart. And who is the culprit? No, actually it’s not a person. *sigh*.

If there’s something you can be jealous of, that is soccer. That is your biggest competition. His decisions and plan for the day will revolve around soccer. The schedules of the match, the availability of the soccer games where he can participate; all these factors will determine what time he’ll sleep or wake up, how he’ll organize his day or where he will be at just to watch or play the game. Even the type of website or magazine that he will read or browse upon will always be related to sports. Specifically the soccer page.

5. Family matters

If soccer is so important to him, the family is more. If he is far away from his family, he’ll ensure that he’s always in touch with them such as calling them every other week to say hi or chitchat with them. As much as possible he wants to be with them not until he starts to have his own family, I guess.

In this aspect, I think Filipinas in relationship with Mexicans can relate to this. Like Mexicans, we also has high regards and value to our family. They are our top reasons behind whatsoever endeavors we seek to achieve in life. Our close ties with our family is part of our culture.

To a Mexican, If his mother says no or disagree on a certain thing, he will always follow her mom’s advise and respect her opinions. Her mom’s role to his choices is way more influential even that of his dad’s.

6. Banda is the coolest music

That explains why Mexicans are not that into American music. I mean, in comparison to Filipino’s taste of music which seems too americanized that even our sole Pinoy music gets threatened from this popular western tune; on the other hand, Mexican music is so rich and abounding.

Norteno, ranchero, cumbia, salsa, even Spanish pop music, mariachi, reggaeton, banda are just a few of the music genres that normally plays on the radio and in other musical platforms. It might depend from where he is from in Mexico, but if your guy loves bullfighting and lucha libre, tendency is he also likes listening to banda music a lot.

So prepare to listen for a blast of banda songs whenever you’re at home eating out some Mexican foods with him.

Colorful pinatas and florid flowers in papier-mâché, Mexican antojitos in tricolor sauces, the mariachi band, the overflow of tequila and corona are the common elements to find in a Mexican party. Attending a couple of fiestas or party in a year is an understatement because Mexico is one of the countries with the most number of festivals in the world reaching up to 5000 by rough estimation every year.

Hanging out with Mexicans will tell you that they are one of those groups that adore partying as if there’s no tomorrow. A party means a whole night or entire day celebration for them. It sometimes lasts for 3 days, a week or even more. Drinking is endless. You might start the party when the sun is not yet setting and might leave it when the sun is rising. Mexicans really know how to throw a lively party that will fill up your entire senses; from the sights to the sound. Your eyes and ears are in for a ride.
